ARTIST AND PERSONAL BIOGRAPHIES:
As the son of an engineer, I grew up around mechanical objects and hand tools of all types. I was fortunate to have this experience amplified at a technical high school where I received a unique set of skills in: drafting, woodworking, and metal shop. With a successful 35 yr. career in academic medicine, specializing in cancer imaging and a personal diagnosis of cancer, I decided to revisit my love of working with my hands. Retiring to Asheville was the perfect prescription, providing time, a culture rich in the arts, and inspiration from local artists. I began to take ceramics seriously developing my skills in hard- slab construction. Time was spent at Village Potters and Odyssey Clayworks as well as a master class at the Penland School of Crafts under the direction of Kenneth Baskin. This enabled me to address the formation of vintage objects from my childhood in the form of hand tools. My next hurdle was to develop surfaces, the patina, that initially drew me to these vintage objects. I adapted glazes and refined processes of application and experimented with surface embellishment techniques such as sandblasting. The forms I produce include a wide range of hand tools encompassing many trades: woodworking, metal-works, glass- works, plumbing, and electrical, The sculptural pieces reflect a combination of exposure to “hand use” and “the elements of time” to mimic realistic wear patterns: rust, worn metal, and distressed paint surfaces.

Personal Statement:
I attended college at Brandeis University and subsequently pursued a career in medicine. My residency in Diagnostic Radiology was at Stanford University followed by fellowship training at Duke University, sub- specializing in body imaging. While training, I developed an interest in oncology and oncologic imaging. I then accepted faculty positions at: Duke University, Georgetown University’s Lombardi Cancer Center, and finally at MD Anderson Cancer Center as an oncologic radiologist. Here I became Professor of Radiology administering the large body imaging section and was awarded the Gerald D. Dodd Jr. Distinguished Chair. During this time I published more than 200 scientific articles and 7 books, the most recent being the leading textbook in cancer imaging: "Oncologic Imaging: A Multidisciplinary Approach" I also had the opportunity to participate as an invited visiting professor to more than 25 countries. It was this experience that led me to develop my national and international courses in cancer imaging focusing on the multidisciplinary team (radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons) approach involved in caring for cancer patients. These unique courses continue today, including an annual fall course in Asheville that is nationally recognized.
With a successful 35 yr. career and a personal diagnosis of cancer, I decided to revisit my love of working with my hands during my second act, retirement and the development of my skills in the ceramic arts.
